I hope all the moms had a wonderful Mother's Day. May the sweet and Blessed Mother guide you to Jesus, just as She showed us. May you imitate her love and devotion. May we in return, also be loving, patient, understanding and supportive to our mothers.
~This Week: May 14th~
CAPS (Child Abuse Protection Service) will present their child safety program entitled Safety Rules to the 2nd graders this week.
Safety Rules is a 3 day program that focuses on who to tell when there is an emergency such as a fire, physical injury, sexual, emotional harm and neglect.
Mrs. Carol Manley is continuing the HEPP (Health Education Prevention Program) with the students in grades 5-8. This program covers topics such as the dangers of drugs, alcohol and tobacco, bullying, and child abuse. She is an asset to have in the school and a wonderful resource provided by Nassau Boces.
This week the students in grades 4 and 5 will travel to Norwalk, Connecticut to visit the Maritime Aquarium.
The students in grade 6 will travel to New Jersey to The Medieval Times Restaurant.
The students in grade 8 will travel to Pennsylvania to spend the day at the Great Wolf Lodge in celebration of their upcoming graduation.
School is closed on Thursday, May 17th in honor of the Lord’s Ascension. It is a Holy Day of Obligation.
School will be back in session on Friday, May 18th.
~Effort and Conduct Rubrics~
Please return the confirmation tear-off acknowledging receipt of your child's conduct and effort rubric to school this week.
Effort and conduct are very important elements of a child's progress. The two areas contribute to a child's academic success as well as promote the school's philosophy and policies.
St. Dominic Elementary School's Effort and Conduct rubrics reflect the personal growth and community awareness section of the report card. For example, "Complies with School Policies" and "Integrates Peace and Justice" are two examples of some of the descriptors on the rubric. These two descriptors include, but are not limited to, uniform regulations, lateness, absenteeism, discipline and conduct.
Did you know that only one bracelet is allowed to be worn on a child's wrist? I personally have noticed both boys and girls wearing an abundance of rope bracelets on their wrists. Students are also wearing hair accessories that are not in compliance with the school policies. Students texting and using their cell phones has been brought to my attention as well. The school's policy regarding cell phones is quite clear. Students are not to use or have their phones out for any reason on school property. This includes the Social Room, playground and bathrooms. If a child needs to contact his/her parent, he/she should report to the office. It would be unfortunate for a student to receive a poor grade in these areas and possibly jeopardize awards and recognition due to non-compliance with school policies.
Please review
the school handbook which is located in the front of the school calendar and take
special note of your child's effort and conduct rubric.

The teachers and I have been attending workshops regarding the new Common Core Curriculum. New York State adopted the new curriculum in July of 2010 with implementation of the English Language Arts and math Common Core State Standards in September 2012.
With the adoption of the curriculum, all teachers will be considered teachers of English Language Arts. In order to prepare for the implementation of the new curriculum standards, the teachers and I are creating interdisciplinary units of study integrating science, social studies, art, physical education, library, computer, and Spanish with English Language Arts and math. More information regarding the Common Core Curriculum can be found on the following websites:

The stations were prayed in silhouette formations that dramatized the last few days of Jesus' life. Thank you Mrs. Siviglia, Mrs. Bifulco, Mrs. Reynolds-Brennan and the 4th and 5th graders for providing the school community with this special Way of the Cross. You assisted us in developing a deeper understanding of the Passion of Our Lord.

Books are the GREATEST show on Earth!
This year the school celebrated PARP: Parents As Reading Partners from March 19th to March 23rd.
